Why EcoScore
Verified impact, not vibes.
Every product is scored on materials, lifecycle, repairability and packaging — with evidence on file. No self-declared claims, no marketing copy.
85–100
Verified leader in category. Evidence on all four signals.
70–84
Strong score with at least three signals fully evidenced.
55–69
Better than category average, missing evidence on one pillar.
Below 55
Acceptable but below category average — visibility down-weighted.
Methodology
Four signals. Equal weight.
A grade reflects the worst-evidenced pillar — sellers can’t average their way to A+ on a strong material with no packaging data.
Materials
We assess every input — fibre, polymer, metal, finish — against verified low-impact alternatives in the same category.
What we measure
- Recycled or biobased content share
- Restricted substance compliance (REACH, RoHS)
- Origin documentation and traceability
Lifecycle
Cradle-to-gate carbon, water and land use compared to category benchmark — not absolute targets.
What we measure
- Verified LCA or category-mapped EPD
- Energy mix declared at production site
- Useful life expectation in months/cycles
Repairability
Time-to-repair, modularity and parts availability — based on iFixit-style teardown methodology.
What we measure
- Tools required and disassembly steps
- Spare parts available for 5+ years
- Repair manual published by seller
Packaging
Pack-to-product ratio, recyclability of every layer and reusability scored independently from the product.
What we measure
- Plastic-free or mono-material outer pack
- Mass-to-product ratio under 8%
- Curbside-recyclable in EU & UK
Threshold bands
What every grade means.
Evidence on file
Every claim is documented.
Sellers upload primary documents. We cross-check, time-stamp, and link them on the product page so you can verify the basis of any score.
Materials evidence
Bill of materials, recycled-content declarations, REACH/RoHS test reports and origin certificates uploaded by the seller.
Lifecycle evidence
Product LCA (ISO 14040/44), EPD, or category-mapped impact data. Energy-mix declaration is required at production site.
Seller-provided certificates
GOTS, GRS, RCS, FSC, B Corp, Fairtrade, EU Ecolabel — all verified against issuer registries before counting toward score.
Common questions
How is EcoScore verified?
Every signal traces to documented evidence in the seller dashboard. We cross-check certificate numbers against issuer registries and re-validate annually or on product change.
Can a seller game the score?
Self-declared inputs without evidence carry zero weight. Mismatched documents trigger a manual review and listing pause until resolved.
What happens if a product changes?
Sellers must re-submit evidence on material, manufacturing or packaging change. Scores recompute within 7 days; buyers see the new grade and the change date.
Does packaging really count?
Yes — packaging is one of four equal pillars. Plastic-laminate or oversized packs lower the score even when the product itself is excellent.
Where do I see the evidence?
Every product page has an Evidence drawer linking to certificates, LCA and repair docs. A+ products always link directly; lower grades show what is missing.
